I worked long hours under stressful conditions and in toxic environments just to achieve my idea of success.
One day while I was at work, a customer sat in front of me, waiting to be assisted.
It had been a busy day, filled with an endless flow of customers coming in to resolve one issue or the other regarding their banking transactions. I hadn’t even had time to stand up from my desk for lunch.
But once again, I was forced to ignore the hunger pains gripping my stomach because a customer was sitting in front of me, waiting to be attended to.
As the customer settled into her seat, I looked up and said, “Welcome to the Bank. How may I help you today?”
The customer looked at me quizzically.
I didn’t understand why. Not to mention, there was a long line of customers behind her. I didn’t have time for her confusion.
After a few seconds, the customer replied, “Mckayla, are you ok?”
The customer sitting in front of me was my sister.
Due to the stress and pressure of my job, I did not recognize my own sister, who was sitting directly in front of me, just a few inches away.
That was when it dawned on me that the price I was paying for ‘success’ was too high. I had to find something else to work for.
But if not money, then what?
After much self-reflection and a career move to Human Resource Management, I realized nothing made me as happy (like stupidly happy) as helping others.
I didn’t want to just live. I wanted to:
1. Change the world
2. Make an impact
3. Build meaningful relationships
In HR, I got a small taste of that. But the politics and tight budgets quickly overshadowed the joy I got from coaching and mentoring, employee engagement, and learning and development.
I wasn’t able to build meaningful relationships like I wanted to.
I didn’t feel as though I was making an impact
I certainly wasn’t changing the world from my desk.
It got to a point where I needed to align my career with my values.
So, I made a change.
I pivoted to copywriting, specifically email marketing, and chose to work with mission-driven businesses and brands that care, a.k.a the real superheroes.
Because I knew that changing the world was an impossible task for one person alone to accomplish.
The mission is simply too big. We need to work together.
I also knew that the only way we can accomplish the impossible is if everyone functions in their zone of genius.
I am not the main character in this epic battle between the forces of good and evil.
You are.
I’m just the intelligence specialist who helps you use strategic email marketing to connect with your true fans, build long-term relationships, and drive profits, so you can accomplish the mission.
Working for money may bring satisfaction.
But working for the greater good? That brings fulfillment.
If you're ready to make me the Alfred to your Batman, the Miss Moneypenny to your 007, the Jarvis to your Iron Man...then let's talk.
